Artists: Joel Gauthier
Joel Gauthier was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in June 1955. His jungle scenes have become a genre of their own, have been reproduced in many books and articles about Haitian art, and have long attracted the attention of serious collectors of Haitian art. His paintings are widely illustrated in publications about Haitian art.
Gauthier's paintings are part of a permanent exhibition at the Haitian Institute in Washington, D.C., and more recently were on exhibit at the Organization of American States, also in Washington. We recently had the opportunity to purchase three of these paintings, all of which are c.1980, from an important private collection of Haitian art. These are excellent examples of the artist's earlier work.
Unfortunately, Gauthier does not title his work individually, so we will need to subtitle these pieces "Jungle #1, Jungle #2, etc. for identification and ordering purposes.
