Artists: Karen Stinnett
Karen Stinnett works in watercolors and oils, and can hardly remember a time when she was not painting. She has won numerous awards, including first prizes in the American National Miniature Show, "Watercolor: Southeast," Westmoreland Nationals, and special merit award at the Savoir Faire Juried National Exhibition. She and her art were the subject of a feature article in the prestigious magazine "Watercolor" (1995). Her paintings have adorned the covers of three regional magazines.
Karen received her BFA at Western Carolina University, then studied painting and printmaking at the University of Georgia and received her MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work is about the inherent abstraction of structure as defined by strong light. While her subjects are "realistic," she thinks of her work as abstract. "As I work on a painting, it develops as an abstraction to the point where I sometimes forget that I'm painting representationally ...when the shapes and the colors are put together, the subject is what they form. I've always thought the random structure of the world is more abstract than pure abstraction.."
Ms. Stinnett's work is in many corporate and private collections; among the former are R.J. Reynolds, Inc., Wachovia National Bank, Embassy Suites Hotels, Equicor Corp., The University of Virginia, Charles E. Smith Co., and Gullet, Sanford & Robinson, Inc.
