Artists: Laurent Casimir
Laurent Casimir was born May 8, 1928 in Anse-a-Veau, Haiti to a very poor family. He moved to Port au Prince at an early age, where he joined the Centre d'Art in 1946. He soon developed a unique style, rendering Haitian market scenes in crowded detail. His work attracted much attention, and he is very widely collected. Institutional collectors include the Figge Collection, the Davenport Museum.
Casimir died in 1990.
The cockfight painting exhibited here was purchased from the artist in 1973.
