Artists: Gerard Paul
Gerard Paul was born in 1943 in Port-au-Prince. Orphaned at the age of six, he was a cabinet maker, a mason, and a house painter. By age 14 he was apprenticed to a carpenter and then to a bricklayer and a house painter. Working at the residence of the German Ambassador, in 1963 he was hired as a servant. Soon after, he showed his first paintings to the wife of the Ambassador, Mrs. Malsy-Minsk. The Ambassador, who ultimately built a large collection of Paul's work, was quick to encourage him in his unique naive style by providing the paints and canvas. Paul later became associated with the Monnin Gallery, and was subsequently shown in many international exhibitions, including the Seraphine Gallery in Paris.
These paintings in our gallery were purchased from the artist in 1973.
