Artists: Gerard Valcin
Gerard Valcin was born in Port-au-Prince in 1925, and died in 1988. Valcin is considered one of Haiti's greatest painters. Seldon Rodman, in his excellent work 'Where Art Is Joy: Haitian Art - The First Forty Years' says: "Gerard Valcin and Wilmino Domond, next to Andre Pierre himself, were the dominent figures of the second generation." Valcin's paintings rarely come on the market today, and are treasured by serious collectors of Haitian art.
Originally a tile-setter, Valcin began painting at the Centre d'Art in 1950. His art reflects an eloquent interpretation of Haitian reality, mainly religious (voudou) but also in such scenes as the country wedding, below. This painting was painted in 1972. It has been illustrated in several catalogs, including Christie's auction catalog of November, 1992 - estimated at $6000-8000 (copies available on request).
