Artists: Robert Saint-Brice
Robert Saint-Brice was born in Petion-Ville in 1893, and died in 1973 in Port-au-Prince. He began painting in 1918 and became a member of the Centre d'Art in 1949.
Saint-Brice was a houngan, or voudou priest, and his paintings represent his personal interpretation of his religious experiences and in particular, his dreams. He considered his works to represent messages from his Indian and African ancestors. His identification, among the first, of the loa Erzulie with the Virgin Mary has been debated hotly by the Catholic Church in Haiti.
