Artists: Victor Jean-Claude
Victor Jean-Claude was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He began his artistic career as a creator of voudou drapeaus, or flags, and became a painter only in the 1990s. He died suddenly in 2004.
As is apparent from his work, Victor is fascinated by the female figure; his paintings depict stylized animals and birds, and large women as idealized objects. While this may seem a long way from the religious subjects of the drapeaus, it is not difficult to see the women in his paintings as contemporary depictions of the loa Erzulie.
