Artists: Saincilius Ismael
Saincilius Ismael was born in Petite-Riviere de l'Artibonite, Haiti, in April, 1940 and died in 1998 or 1999. He belonged to what Pataki, in her book "Haitian Painting" calls the Christian School. Christianity and voudou are thoroughly mixed in Haiti, of course, and it is difficult to know exactly what combination of things influences Ismael's paintings. Interestingly, Nadal and Bloncourt, in their great book, "La Peinture Haitien," illustrates an Ismael Madonna with the description: "A remarkable example of the penetration of Christian art into Voodoo." Whatever his inspiration, Ismael is regarded as one of the foremost contemporary Haitian painters. He began to paint in 1956, and since 1985 was the director of the Ceramics Center in Deschappelle.
