Artists: Calixte Henry
Calixte Henry was born in Port-au-Prince, January 3, 1933. He began to paint at the Centre d'Art in 1955. Not long after, he abandoned painting brushes in favor of razor blades and painting knives which lent a certain finesse and transparency to his paintings. Calixte Henry eliminates all extrenous details in his paintings for a refined line. He obtains volume through the contrasts of tones. The rudimentary drawing is compensated by a harmony of elegant colors.
Henry received a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation of New York in the 1980s. His works have been widely exhibited in France and in Switzerland as well as in Haiti and the US, and have a world-wide reputation among galleries and collectors. His paintings illustrate scores of books on Haitian art.
