Artist's comments |
(Gallery Note): This large and striking painting is one of the best examples of the artist's work we have seen. It depicts Guédé, or Baron Samedi - the voudou loa of the cemetery, death, the underworld. It is replete with symbolism specific to the loa: the cross, the black rooster, the skull, the top hat, the colors (black and purple) and of course the veves. The digging implements carried on his shoulder suggest that he will soon be busy in the cemetery. As the lord of the underworld, it is through Guédé that zombis are brought up from the grave.
This painting is captioned "Broive Guédé" on the front, with the additional caption "General Grand Chemin" and the date 03-12-77 on the back. We obtained this piece from the owner, who purchased it from Galerie Monin in Port-au-Prince in 1978. The painting and its hand-carved Haitian frame are in superb condition. |
